OPEN BURNING RULES & REGULATIONS
1. A permit (written) must be obtained from this Department prior to any request to burn allowable materials. This permit expires on May 2nd in the year it is obtained.
2. On each & every day which you want to burn brush, you MUST call 508-759-4412 or 508-759-4413 only between the hours of 10:00 & 11:00 A.M. (NO VOICE MAIL) to be put on the "Burning List". It must be understood that on certain days, burning will not be allowed. The decision to burn, or to not allow burning, is made by the Chief or Duty Officer.
3. The Open Burning Season runs from January 15th through April 30th.
4. All Permit Fires MUST be extinguished by 4:00 P.M. each day. Fires cannot be started before 10:00 A.M.
5. Any person(s) who violate any of these regulations will have their permits revoked for the remainder of the burning season. NO EXCEPTIONS!
THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL IS ALLOWED TO BE BURNED:
1. Domestic tree trimmings, pruning & garden preparations.
2. Commercial tree trimmings & pruning.
3. Maintenance of existing ways.
4. Removal of driftwood from beach & shore areas.
THE FOLLOWING IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE BURNED:
1. Grass, hay, leaves & pine needles.
2. Residential, industrial or commercial land clearing for site or road development.
3. Burning of whole trees or stumps.
4. Burning of material other than natural wood.
5. Burning of construction or demolition materials.
OPEN BURNING MUST BE ACCOMPLISHED IN ACCORDANCE WITH:
1. Without causing a nuisance.
2. With smoke MINIMIZING starters.
3. On land proximate to the place of generation of such material or at a place specified on the permit.
4. At a location greater than 75' from any dwelling.
5. A water hose must be available nearby, should it be needed.
6. A responsible person must be in attendance at all times while the fire is burning.
